MarkerTools

MarkerTools is a FrameMaker plugin developed for FrameMaker 6.0 and above, and can be used with both structured and unstructured files. This documentation was updated for MarkerTools 1.05 on 20 March 2017.

MarkerTools provides numerous commands that make it easier to work with markers of various types.

There are two groups of commands, book commands and single file commands. In general, all single file commands are available as book commands, but not vice-versa. Depending on which type of file has the focus in FrameMaker, the Pubs-Tools menu will display the appropriate commands.

Important: Because these commands can make global and irreversible changes to your files, be sure to have backups of all files being processed. For the current list of known limitations (or bugs), see Known Limitations.

Book Commands

The “Book” processing commands are only available when a FrameMaker book file has the focus.

Watch Markers

If enabled, displays a message after you delete one or more markers of any type. This gives you a chance to undo the deletion before it’s too late.

(Esc, Shift+P, Shift+M, Shift+W)

Export Markers

Exports the marker data for the specified marker type from all files in the book.

Import Markers

Imports the marker file generated by the Export Marker command into all files in the book.

Update Marker Variables

Updates the marker variables in all files in the book.

Single File Commands

Insert/Edit Markers

Displays an enhanced Marker dialog that you can use in place of the standard Marker dialog for creating and editing markers. In addition to allowing you to define the element tag and marker type, the marker text area is large enough to view the complete text of the marker without scrolling. Also, you can select from a list of user-definable marker building blocks and insert them into the marker text. Select multiple markers and browse through them all without leaving the dialog. The number of characters in the marker is shown in the label.

(Esc, Shift+P, Shift+M, Shift+M) *

Search Markers

Search for a text string in markers of a specific type or element tag (in structured files). After specifying your search criteria, you can search for and select markers by pressing Esc, Shift+S.

(Esc, Shift+P, Shift+M, Shift+S) *

Expand/Collapse Markers

Expand and collapse the marker text of specified marker types.

(Esc, Shift+P, Shift+M, Shift+E) *

Watch Markers

(Esc, Shift+P, Shift+M, Shift+W)

(Esc, Shift+P, Shift+M, Shift+X)

* If you want to define custom shortcut keys for the Marker Edit, Marker Search or Marker Expand commands, see INI-Only Settings.

The Pubs-Tools Menu

Each tool you install adds a submenu to the Pubs-Tools menu which is available on the FrameMaker menu bar. In addition to the tool’s commands, the submenu provides access to the tool’s online Help and “About” information.

To activate a tool, choose Pubs-Tools > FileTools > Enter Authorization Code. You can get a 30-day trial authorization code from leximation.com or when you purchase a tool, you will receive a permanent authorization code which is good for all minor updates to the version you purchased.

Use the Pubs-Tools > Check for Updates command to check for updates to all FrameMaker Pubs-Tools that you have installed.
